How a rep helps your spec survive value engineering

Drawing tools on a floor plan

Value engineering is a normal part of most projects. When bids come in over budget, the team looks for savings, and the lighting package is an easy place to look. Sometimes the substitute is a good product. Sometimes it is a fixture that looks similar on a cut sheet and very different on the ceiling.

What gets lost in a substitution

  • Light output and distribution, which change the photometric layout.
  • Color quality and consistency from fixture to fixture.
  • Dimming and controls compatibility, which matters for Title 24 in California.
  • Finish, size and trim details the designer chose on purpose.
  • Lead time, which can cost more than the savings if the job waits.

What a rep can do

Because we work with the manufacturer, we can often find savings inside the specified line: a different trim, a standard length instead of a custom one, a driver that does the same job for less. When a change is needed, we can show the design team side-by-side data so the decision is made on facts.

The goal is the same for everyone on the job: a price that works and a building that looks the way it was drawn. Bring us the schedule before the cuts start, and we will look for the savings first.
